Arkenol - The Company

Home | Company | Site Map

Arkenol, Inc., is a privately-held company headquartered in Mission Viejo, California. The company has a proprietary concentrated acid hydrolysis technology that converts cellulosic materials (e.g. waste paper, wood, sugar cane bagasse, energy crops, etc.) into high-value chemicals and transportation fuels (e.g. ethanol, citric acid, lactic acid, acetone, butanol, etc.). Arkenol currently is developing several "biorefineries" throughout the world that would utilize this advanced technological process.

The company was formed in 1992 as an affiliate of ARK Energy, a successful developer of independent power production facilities. The original mission of the company was to commercialize the technology and develop stand alone steam customers to assist ARK Energy in its power plant development efforts.

The company's mission has since expanded beyond the thermal host strategy to focus on becoming the worldwide leader in the production and sale of biobased chemicals and fuels. It now employs a full team of professionals with many years of project development, management, and technical expertise. Arkenol has developed numerous strategic relationships with equipment vendors, engineering and construction firms, chemical and fuel marketing firms, lenders, and political entities which will be key to Arkenol's continued success. By teaming with regional industry leaders, Arkenol will produce and market its products into defensible niche markets where it enjoys a substantial cost advantage over its competitors. Utilizing its competitive production economics and favorable environmental production practices, each of Arkenol's projects will be sited and designed to take advantage of the rapidly expanding market opportunities being created by economic, political and environmental drivers.

Arkenol is in final development of its first commercial-scale biorefinery, a combined 4 million gallon per year ethanol production and 40,000 metric ton per year citric acid facility in Sacramento, California (artists' rendering of the biorefinery and associated power plant, - 113k file), and it has undertaken preliminary development into many other potential locations and product markets. An additional domestic project using MSW is in active development in Los Angeles, CA. Active international projects are currently being evaluated in China, South Africa and Italy.

Arkenol is actively seeking strategic partnerships and development opportunities on a worldwide basis.
